Chapter One Questions

1.
Name two advances or developments that have occurred in technology since the 1970s that you feel have had significant effects on education, and explain why these technological changes had such effects.
Your Answer:
Two developments that have occurred in technology since the 1970's include microcomputers and the World Wide Web. Microcomputers allowed for teachers to take back control of instructional and administrative applications from district data processing offices. They also give teachers more software and programs which can be used in the classroom to benefit students learning. The World Wide Web entered teachers into a "Information Superhighway." It allows teachers to find information for lessons such as pictures and text. Students benefit from the Web by using it for projects and schoolwork.

2.
Discuss one emerging trend in technology and the effect it could have on classrooms and schools.
Your Answer:
One emerging trend in technology is wireless connectivity. This could have many positive effects on classrooms and schools such as allowing teachers and students to maneuver around the classroom and school while still being able to receive internet access. Wireless connectivity reduces the amount of wires lying around which often times cause problems and get in the way.

3.
Explain reasons for developing an electronic portfolio.
Your Answer:
Electronic portfolios are a collection of a student's work products over time. They are arranged in a way in which the creator and others can see how their skills have developed and progressed. They can also be used for students who graduate college and are applying for a teaching job. The administrator can use the student's developing portfolio to help assist with the hiring process.
